This car was built by Pullman in 1924 for Southern Railway, retired by Southern
in 1970, and passed through the hands of several private collectors before being
acquired by several members of SARM in 1996.
The car was restored by members of the Southern Applachia Railway Museum from 1996 to 1999. The seating area was restored during the winter of 1998-99. The kitchen awaits future work.
During restoration done by volunteer members of the Southern Appalachia Railway
Museum in the spring of 1999 considerable welding was done to repair this damage
from the 1958 accident.
SARM volunteers restored the interior, exterior, and running gear of 3164.
The photo on the right shows the "COTS" stencil on the rebuilt brake system
- the brakes were cleaned, oiled, tested and stencilled by ETRC (East Tennessee
Rail Car) at Knoxville on April 4, 1999.
